The power of an audience response system is in its simplicity. An idea is proposed and everyone gets an equal anonymous vote. Most of our clients believe that communications in small group meetings is so easy that there is no need for an audience response system (ARS). That is because ideas, like viruses, spread easily and more rapidly when people are close in proximity. It is thought that ARS is only useful as a way to quantify large numbers of votes, or opinions.

Small groups often benefit most from the anonymity of the system. In small groups, it is easier for the group’s opinion to be swayed by influencers. Remembering that nothing said is anonymous when raising hands, or verbalizing opinions, peer pressure or the presence of boss influences others. They “telegraph” the proper response to everyone in the room to mimic. Most people don’t see it happening, so it never gets corrected. (I often have to tell dynamic CEOs that their first job is to listen.)

The anonymity provided by an audience response system, combined with common sense, is a simple cure to an often invisible idea spreading like a virus in a small group.

After graduating from New York University with a degree in Communications, Alan attended the New School for Social Research, Graduate School at N.Y.U. and the Master’s Program in Cinema at U.C.L.A. Following his service in the U.S. Army, Alan was employed by Doyle, Dane and Burnbach Advertising Agency. He worked in the U.S. and Europe in the feature motion picture production business. He was employed by Quick Tally Interactive Systems for one year prior to acquiring the company. He has owned and run the company for almost three decades and has pioneered in the manufacturing of ARS equipment and providing interactive event services. In addition to US State and Federal Government Agencies, America’s leading companies, associations and television networks, he has also worked for events clients in the EU, New Zealand, Hong Kong Thailand and Dubai.
